TMSA Triangle: A Short History

TMSA Triangle is a proud member of TMSA Public Charter Schools.
TMSA’s founders include some of North Carolina’s most distinguished scholars, engineers, physicians, and business leaders. In 2008, they united around a shared belief: high-quality public STEM education in grades K–12 is not a luxury —it is a right. Their vision was to create a well-rounded, tuition-free school that delivers a rigorous STEM curriculum paired with strong character education — proving that it can be achieved on a modest budget. The first school opened in 2008 in Greensboro as Triad Math and Science Academy.
In 2009, to meet the growing demand, Triangle Math and Science Academy opened in downtown Raleigh’s Moore Square in 2012 as a K–6 school with 272 students.
In 2013, the school moved to its building on Gregson Drive in Cary. The Cary campus holds a special place for the TMSA Triangle community — it is where we graduated our first senior class in 2018.
As enrollment grew, the Cary campus reached full capacity. TMSA built a new elementary school in Apex. In August 2022, TMSA Triangle relocated its high school division to the upper floor of the new Apex building while awaiting completion of the permanent high school facility across the street.
In August 2024, the new high school building was completed, and TMSA Triangle High School moved into its new home. This expansion nearly doubled our student population. The Cary campus continued serving grades K–7, while the TMSA Triangle Apex campus began serving grades 8–12. From our humble beginning with 272 students, TMSA Triangle served more than 2,000 students in the 2024–2025 school year.
Our waitlist continues to grow into the thousands. Although TMSA cannot keep up with the demand, we work hard to expand opportunities and serve as many families as possible.
Most recently, TMSA Triangle acquired a new building in Durham, scheduled to open as a K–5 school in 2026. This addition will further increase our student body and extend our reach across the Triangle region.
We are proud to be the best K–12 charter school in North Carolina and we continue striving to meet the ever-increasing demand to the best of our abilities.
